"The MED NET Civil Society & Independent Media Development Project"

The Seminar began by registering the participants, followed by the welcoming speech by the Project Coordinator. She started her speech by welcoming the attendance and then provided a definition of the activities and objectives of the MED NET project which is "Creating partnerships between civil society organizations and independent media institutions to formulate an agreed work mechanism between them".  As she pointed out the mechanisms that will be presented by the seminar, and confirmed the necessity of getting out the findings and recommendations of the participants to make the necessary modifications and access for best results in the second phase of the project.

Palestinian Youth Union General Director, Mr. Muharram Barghouti mentioned in his speech, the role of the PYU in inculcating the values of democracy and emphasizing on working with young people because they are the base of the community and the engine for change, and confirmed the union's policy, which is rejecting any conditional financing, he praised the role of the European Union, and COSPE, calling
.other organizations to activate their important role in society

The most prominent conclusions were summarized in utilizing both traditional and social media in the CSOs policies, without obstructing or blocking access to public; where CSOs work on motivating awareness among community members to help in stirring public opinion, and enable the community members to gather information more quickly.
The identity of media institutions (Governmental, commercial, independent, social) doesn't make a difference to the studied CSOs, because their recognition to the role of independent media is very weak.
Most of the CSOs head towards media with their ideas and activities and consider them their executives. This reflects the weakness of their strategic planning in promoting democracy.

The positive attitude of independent media institutions about CSOs role constitutes an important opportunity for CSOs to reinforce and strengthen their relationship with independent media.
However, currently, the cooperation between the CSOs and independent media institutions is considered random and seasonal, due to the limited coordination mechanisms between them such as (committees, coalitions, partnerships etc.) limiting the development of democratization and promotion of human rights strategies.
The weak partnership between CSOs and media institutions  lead to a limitation in the role of  media institutions and freelance journalists and considered them as only transmitters to the news and activities of democracy and human rights, instead of being advocates and

promoters

The participants praised the role of this study as the first step to have an objective and a written report that evaluates the relationship between CSOs and independent media.
The independent media institutions representatives emphasized the necessity of hiring a media coordinator in each CSO to be the link that provides them with the material and information that needs promoting. Allowing media institutions to perform their work and build a relationship with the largest possible number of CSOs

The most prominent discussion was about the recommendation to form a coalition between independent media institutions and CSOs to ensure a participatory and consultative relationship, and to implement all the recommendations of the study.
